Light Paintings: Fifteen Seconds of Illumination

So the other day I got bored and decided I would try art in a medium that I'd never done before. After about fifteen minutes of Googling, I found a bunch of interesting looking pictures with "light painting" and variations thereof in the title. They turned out to be quite easy to make- all I had to do was set my camera for an extended exposure (the longest I could get was 15 seconds) and swirl a light around in the dark. Up there I used my iPod and cellphone.

Matches also worked...and served to make the room bright enough for me to appear as well.

I found some glow sticks and cracked them too. Does that look like a flower to you? Kind of? Well after a while I realized the big difficulty with trying to make distinct images like this. Besides the fact that I only had fifteen seconds, I couldn't see what I was doing until I'd already done it.

So it then became more of an abstract medium. And I loved it, they were so fun to make. I realized I could now paint in any direction, not just right, left, up, and down like on paper or canvas. I could now go forwards and backwards too, I could paint anywhere I could move. And it got me thinking that if I had more than one camera, could have multiple pictures of the same painting from different angles. Well, I don't have more than one camera, but what I do have is about fifty or so more light paintings in a folder on my desktop. Below are the ones I like best.

Okay one last thing: new year, new decade, new blog. What you can expect from me: sporadic but quality updates. I'll try and post at least once a week. You can also expect: more talk, better quality photos, more experimental stuff (as per above), probably videos, and at some point, music. Expect the blog itself to retain this blank/minimalist appearance for a while too. It's purpose is function- the aesthetics will be found in the posts themselves. Now, what I expect from you: if you like what you're reading, TELL PEOPLE. Support is nice, and the more people follow, the more motivated I'll be to update. Comments help too. Goodbye for now, I'll be seeing you again soon.
